I am Caleb Suttles (http://www.CalebSuttles.com), and I embarked on a journey one year ago to discover how to live life without regret.

I interviewed over 50 adults of various ages and backgrounds to ask what they regret, and what advice they have for teenagers. The film is a collection of what I found in the process.

A screening of ‘Pre-Do: Foresight in 20/20’ will...

A screening of ‘Pre-Do: Foresight in 20/20’ will take place on December 3, at the Mellow Mushroom in Anderson at 12pm. The film, over 2 hours in duration, will be broken into two parts, separated by an intermission. During the intermission, anyone in attendance will be free to leave. The screening will be followed by a brief Q&A with Caleb Suttles.

Pre-Do is about life. While it centers on the regret of the individuals I interviewed, it is a search for happiness and fulfillment more than anything else. For that reason, much of what is discussed in the film surrounds individual empowerment, and self-love and trust. Believing in yourself and your dreams, and trusting that above all else.

In the process of creating the film, I encountered 80 and 90 year old men who were still in pursuit of their passion, middle aged men and women who had fearlessly decided to start anew, and some individuals who felt they had witnessed the expiration of their dreams and were struggling to find meaning in its place.

What tied each interview together were dreams and aspirations. No one had lived without a vision for their lives. They found purpose in their goals.

When I found the “Before I Die Wall,” the work of Candy Chang in New Orleans, online, I was instantly touched. I couldn’t imagine a more appropriate visual demonstration of the themes and ideas of my film.

Inspired by the wall I created 5 boards, using the same design, and carried them around my community, asking anyone I could find to write their dreams on them. The response was overwhelming. And the result is the clip I have released today - the ending of the film.

I am so thankful for Candy Chang’s idea, and the visual inspiration it brought not only to my film, but to everyone in my community who was able to take part.

What is Pre-Do?

“If I had only known then what I know now.”

It all started with that simple sentence. 3 years ago, in 2008, I heard that statement, and others like it, repeatedly one week and wondered: Why can’t I know now, what I’ll need to know in the future?

While I recognized the potential of that question, I shelved the idea, too busy in the following years to pursue it. That all changed as I entered my senior year of high school. In August of that year (2010) my senior class was assigned a ‘senior project’. The project was proposed as an outlet for each senior to explore their individual interests and present, at the end of the year, the fruits of their labor in a creative product. Instantly my mind returned to 2008 and the idea for which I already had a name - PreDo.

I am an artist and filmmaker. I have experimented in every medium of art I have had access to throughout my life, and a camera has never been far from reach. In high school I had begun to transition from working mainly in studio art to focusing on filmmaking. This transition served as a platform for my senior project. I had soon decided to return to PreDo and create a documentary film as I embarked on a journey to discover a life free of regret.

The basic idea was simple, I wanted to interview adults who were willing to discuss their regrets and extract advice for myself, and other young adults, concerning decision making. But beyond that, I wanted to include factual information detailing society and government’s impact on decision making and regret as well. I had my work cut out for me.

By May 2011 I had completed portions of the film which I premiered to the student body as my ‘senior project’. From there I worked through the summer, living and breathing the film and it’s mission, and finished in early August. I premiered the film at the Montessori School of Anderson August 13, with the online premier scheduled for 2 months later.

But what had I created? What did PreDo eventually become?

1. PreDo exhibits an abundance of factual information, but only so far as it supports the personal interviews and creative direction of the film. I created it not as an educational documentary, but, instead, as an art installation.

The factual information presented in the film covers a broad range of topics including American economics and politics, psychology, and history. There is particular emphasis on economics as often those I interviewed were greatly affected by financial limitations. Therefore, the information in the film is not politically neutral. It is, at times, a very cynical view of American life.

2. PreDo is controversial and uncomfortable. Controversial mainly because of it’s political leanings, uncomfortable for different reasons. PreDo should speak to everyone in every stage of life. It should encourage young individuals to relentlessly pursue their dreams. It should encourage middle aged adults to refresh their lives and to no longer accept unhappiness or stagnation. It should encourage older adults to realize that it is never too late to pursue dreams and purpose. And it should encourage those at the end of life who might feel dissatisfied with their outcome, if any happen to view the film, to realize that dissatisfaction is default, and that, in many ways, their outcome is due to things beyond their control, namely, societal influences.

Either way, no one should leave the film as they were before. It should ignite something in everyone. It has changed my life in so many ways, and I hope at least a portion of that is conveyed to every viewer.

3. PreDo is art. I would describe it as an experimental, art-centric, theater-driven, docuvlog. The film is visually unique in many ways. It seamlessly transitions from factual information to personal interviews to vlog-style clips. Furthermore, it is ascetically striking. I used every ounce of experience I gained throughout high school (and before) in both graphic and cinematic art to pursue perfection in each clip and shot I chose to include. Furthermore, it is theater-driven. Throughout the film in both dramatized re-enactments and in symbolic dramatizations careful detail is centered on the incorporation of acting and theater.

4. PreDo is the product of universal themes. I discuss at length in the film the cultural context of the project. The film centers around individuals from South Carolina. But I feel strongly that accents are truly the only defining difference between the experiences shared in the film and those of anyone else around the globe. I feel that the information expressed by the adults I interviewed represent universal themes not ones bound by geography. (Though some are uniquely American.)
